About the Role
Open Philanthropy relies on Salesforce to handle grantmaking operations. The system serves as a comprehensive platform for grant processing and managing information, supporting around 150 users — a number that continues to grow. The environment involves significant customization and a complex security setup. This position calls for a versatile Salesforce professional with expertise across architecture, development, DevOps, business analysis, and project management. Candidates who have worked as senior admins or architects at mid-sized organizations or those with consulting backgrounds moving between these functions may find this role particularly engaging.
Key Responsibilities
Salesforce Architecture & Development
- Design and build sophisticated solutions within Salesforce, using a deep understanding of the platform
- Weigh solution options thoughtfully, factoring in scalability, maintenance, and user experience
- Build custom components using Apex, SOQL, and potentially Lightning Web Components or Visualforce
- Lead sessions with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into clear technical plans
- Work hand-in-hand with the internal team to refine and deliver projects
- Guide junior team members and provide support on technical challenges
- Evaluate and integrate new features and third-party tools as needed
- Oversee user support efforts and assist with complex cases
- Help refine processes and improve the current technical setup
Project Management
- Drive Salesforce-related projects from planning through execution
- Define project scope and manage resources effectively
- Keep team members updated and resolve bottlenecks quickly
- Apply agile practices, guiding task estimation, prioritization, and delivery
- Manage several projects at once, shifting focus as priorities change
DevOps
- Promote and apply DevOps practices within the Salesforce team
- Use and teach the preferred development tools, such as IntelliJ + Illuminated Cloud
- Oversee release management or train team members to take on this function
Background & Skills
- Significant experience in Salesforce administration and development
- Deep understanding of solution architecture and technical project leadership
- Strong command of Apex and SOQL; familiarity with Lightning Web Components and Visualforce is a plus
- Solid grasp of Salesforce design approaches and recommended practices
- Experience guiding DevOps efforts in a Salesforce context
- Knowledge of agile methodologies and their application
- Creative problem-solving skills and an ability to tackle complex issues effectively
- Ability to explain technical topics to a broad audience
- A record of delivering projects in complex Salesforce setups
- Strong mentorship abilities
- Salesforce certifications (e.g., System Architect, Application Architect, or developer tracks) are advantageous
- Experience in philanthropic or nonprofit environments is welcome
